New Young Artists

I am always happy to support the work of emerging young artists and the pieces here are just that extra bit special.  These artists are aged 9 and 13-a-fortnight-ago years old, and quite honestly ....  I think I'd better raise my game a bit!

Box with Lid made by nine year old Vicky
They are my two nieces who came all the way from North Yorkshire to stay a few weeks ago.  We got the clay out and they made some wonderful things (these are just a few!!) with very little guidance from me, as I believe in letting their own personalities come through their work.  I was amazed that a nine year old would choose to make a lidded box with handle (with no help whatsoever) - talk about starting at the deep end!

Two beautiful small plates made by Vicky aged nine

She also made and decorated these two little plates - notice how the square stamps round the edge create a hexagon shape in the middle - great spacial awareness going on there!  And of course you all know what BFF stands for?  "Best Friend Forever", apparently!  Presumably a present for her BFF!  And last but not least, this little one below is smaller than my thumb - maybe she should call her Thumbelina!

Sweet little baby by Vicky
Her big sister, Frances, produced some very accomplished pieces.  This one below was whipped up in less than 20 minutes as I recall.  Like the tongue sticking out detail?

Brilliant sculpted head by Fran
Another beauty by Fran - the fish all cut out by hand - no need for boring stencils or patterns here!

Hanging Fish with wonderful scaley markings, by Fran.
Unfortunately there wasn't time to glaze them and fire a second time, so they will be delivered like this, ready to be painted and varnished, if they wish.

Gorgeous hanging wall plaque for mum's kitchen - made by Fran

Their big cousins joined in too - this is my 17year old's group of figures.

Sculpted figures by 17yr old Joe

and last, and most definitely least !! is my 21 year old's slice of pizza - food never very far from his thoughts!  Mushroom and pepperoni,  I think!
Piece of Pizza by 21 yr old Patrick

It's really interesting to see how differently four individuals express themselves when given a ball of clay and told to get on with it. Creativity is a wonderful thing!  (Well, except for the pizza!).

  1. Wow, didn't they all do well. The lidded box is incredible, but presumably they have no concept of what we'd perceive as difficult so just dive in, so to speak!

  4. You will have plenty of apprentices when they leave school to help you with your work! Everybody did very well. I think the pizza crust looks spot on!!

  5. Well your family certainly got more than its fair share of the creative gene, I think it's true to say! Great work, and what a great time they all must have had. (I hope they hung around for clear-up too?)
