Funny when you think about it ....

.... and I did think about it as I was making this for my sister-in-law's birthday.  We get on really well and would be good friends independently of the fact that she happened to marry my brother, and yet .... we have hardly anything in common!

Carolyn is a farmer's daughter.  She is definitely a country girl.  Likes horses.  I don't.  She can deliver newborn lambs.  I couldn't and wouldn't!  I like creating things like these - she is not really and arty-crafty person!

She's quite sporty and goes to the gym a lot.  I'm not sporty and the gym bored me to tears when I tried it!

She and my brother used to go on coast-to-coast bike rides - it used to nearly kill me and the mister just pootling round our lanes for half an hour!

She lives in the Yorkshire Dales and I do love the Dales, so we have that in common, but really not much else!  And yet we talk for hours and email all the time.

Funny when you think about it.

Are your friends like you - or unlike you?

Talking of friends - I must catch up with you all now !

  1. Ha! Love this! I think, you know, you can really connect with some people at a level where common interests aren't a part of it. Sometimes you meet someone and are instantly deep in conversation - but not necessarily about your pet hobbies or interests, which might not coincide, yet you do have SOMETHING in common, whether a sense of humour, love of a place or type of book/music/art etc.
By the same token there are one or two people I know who share my interests, yet they bore me silly, and I wouldn't be wanting to spend too much time in their company.

So that's MY three-ha'ppence worth! Lx

  3. What a delightful plate...I feel like you have introduced me to your sister-in-law.
My sister-in-law and I have little in common, yet we enjoy each other enormously. Friendship is indeed an odd thing.

  4. my brothers wife and I did a girls trip to Australia for 5 weeks and never had across word we get on so well, but my friends are a real mixture and I like that.

  5. I agree with Lynne- I have some really close friends and we go back years and years and years....yet on paper, we shouldn't be friends at all, very little in common and a lot that really we should get into massive disagreements about, but we don't. Yes, friendship is a funny thing. Often, literally- a shared sense of humour goes a long way.

  6. What an absolutely gorgeous plate and such a thoughtful present too. I have a wide mixture of friends all very different, but I do love it when you occasionally meet someone that you really click with and feel completely relaxed with and on the same wavelength. They are the friends that you sometimes don't see for years but just click back in with when you do. I haven't ever really thought about whether my friends are like me, probably nothing like me come to think of it, but you do find common threads.

  8. Yeap, my closest friend and I are totally different. Even in things we have in common, we look at them from different angles and differ in opinions. It is funny and we realized it many years ago - somehow it makes our relationship so live and vibrant for a loooong time now :)

  9. Opposites attract! What a fabulous plate you have made, I am sure your SIL will be blown away with such a personal gift. I cannot wait for my courier delivery next week - you are so clever Cathy. Thanks for your lovely comment on my blog - yes the porch is truly great! I am very fortunate! x

  10. Your work is amazing, as always. Hope your SIL doesn't mind that you've revealed her age for all to see :) I had this very same discussion with my partner the other day. We do have things in common, but we also have a great deal not in common and we both agree that that actually makes us more interesting to each other.

  11. I love your work and to hear the story behind what you've created. I'm laughing as I read your post. Cycling coast to coast? Wow, that's dedicated! She's lucky to get such a lovely, unique birthday present.

  12. I think that's why blog friendships work so well, you share the things you have in common.

  13. Well you know my friend and she is totally unlike me. Firstly she is tidy and likes doing housework which is the complete opposite of me; then she is always late when we meet while I'm early; takes ages to decide on anything and I'm spontaneous but at least we both like textiles which is something. Hope you aren't too bored now you have left work but plenty of time for creations, well done on your sister in laws pressie, bet she was thrilled.

  15. I hardly know my sister in law, and she has never liked me, so I think it's lovely that you two are good friends.

My best friend is a knitter, but I only discovered that after she became my bestie ... we don't obviously have a lot in common but we laugh (a lot) at the same things ... friendships are often built on laughter I find.
